Directing Animation - Our Internal Works

This was my final group project for the module "Directing Animation". The process was unique in the fact that, for the first time, I worked in a group with a specific director, following his vision instead of my own. I believe the end result far exceeded our expectations; I was truly glad to be part of this project.

Quoting the director, Dan Denton:

"The first edit with animation of this film from my directing animation project for which I had to pitch an idea and put together a group to help make it.

I opted to use a mixture of live action and subtle animation to create a piece which looked at the idea of people and place as well as themes of internal and external. Through the use of editing, colour treatment and sound, I wanted to create something with a warm dreamy atmosphere which could also led its self to multi screen projection as an installation.

Sea Whisperers Project - "traço"

"Traço" n. (portuguese translation of the word "stroke") - A single mark made by a writing or marking implement, such as a pen.

With this project, I aimed to represent Margate through its prominetly defined visual identity, as well as the weight of memory underlying every structure in it. I feel that drawing, more than an artistic expression, is a way of shaping memories; as these fade in time, so too is the drawing erased.

I found it thoroughly enjoyable to experiment with charcoal in animation. I expect to do so again in the future.

"Puzzle Box" Project

I just figured it'd be nice to share this movie, as it was my very first fully rendered 3D animation. It was part of a project for the module Projecto Artistico (Artistic Project), back home at Universidade Catolica do Porto. This project represented a huge step forward for me as an aspiring 3D animator: I'm really glad I got to work on it.

Oh, and before you say anything, yes I know the music is massively cheesy; I was supposed to find someone from the sound department to help me make it, but I pretty much ran out of time and had to resort to the backup plan :P

"It's Nice That" Advert Project

This is my most recent work in animation, as well as the very first project I've developed since I started studying at the UCA. The project was part of the Professional Practice module, and consisted in creating a short advert (between 10 and 20 seconds long) for the "It's Nice That" film festival. Although I'm not 100% satisfied with the result (1 more week and we'd have made this so much better), I think it's still very good :)

As a bonus, I'm adding an actual close up of the Lego Block animation inside one of the TVs. I'm still at a level where I can only properly model and animate simple models like these, but still, I'm so proud of it ^^

If you have the time, I strongly advise you to check out the "It's Nice That" website, it's chock-full of visual artsy goodness, hm-hm!

So it begins...

Greetings, bloggers! I've just created this blog as a repository for the work I'm developing during my exchange scholarship in the UK, as well as any future projects I might work on (both in the area of animation and others). I'll try to keep this updated as regularly as possible, or at least as regularly as my laziness allows :P

So far, studying Animation Arts at the UCA has been an amazing experience for me, and I believe by skills as an animator have increased exponentially as a result. Still, I have a lot to learn, so I hope to receive as much constructive criticism as possible through this blog, so I can better myself even further.

Above all else, I hope you enjoy my work :)
